Lanterns

We have 3 oil lanterns. Each one is unique. Two are about the same size and one is much smaller. One of the bigger and the smallest are quite old, while the remaining one is newer. The shapes of all of them are different as well. The smallest one didn’t have any oil in it, so we filled it with the same oil as one of the other ones. After adding the oil, it was interesting to note that the color wasn’t the same. So now each one has a different color of oil, red, orange, and yellow. They are unique in age, design, size, and even color, yet if we turned all the lights out and lit the lanterns, they would all give light. Right now, their purpose is to add to the décor of the room and be available if needed during a power outage.

In many ways we are like those lanterns. We are different sizes, ages, colors, and shapes. We have various talents and abilities, and even shortcomings. We have had different experiences and family backgrounds that have had a part in molding us in to who we are. Not all that has happened has been positive. As I look at some of the things in my life, I realize the tough times have turned out to be invaluable in what it has taught me. I would never have chosen some of the situations to be part of my life, but in retrospect, I see how some of those difficult situations have made me stronger. The strength gained is a result of what God has done in and through the situations. In the midst of my most vulnerable and weak moments, He has used them to teach, strengthen and enable me to stand. I didn’t always see it until later, and I didn’t always enjoy the process, but realize He was and is at work.

My lanterns are not being used right now other than to display their unique beauty. We can feel like our lives are of little value, but when we place them in God’s hands, we can be sure that in His time He will let the true purpose shine forth. Don’t be discouraged, you are valuable and have a purpose!
