Time and Priorities

It has been a busy week. Every night there was something going on. Some reading this live with schedules that busy all the time. We have purposely chosen to not be that busy. There are times when it can’t be helped, but all to often people find themselves running constantly. One parent takes one child to practice or games in one area, the other parent takes kids a different direction. Eating together, if it happens at all is in a rush and maybe fast food. Doing things as a whole family hardly happens, and when it does, even those activities seem like they are done on the run.

When one talks to someone at the end of their life, do they ever say they wish they had packed more into their day? Do they say they wish they had kept themselves and their family busier? Do they regret not working more hours and making more money? I have never heard comments like that. More likely they say they wish they had taken more time to enjoy their family. When kids are grown and gone, what memories will they retain of their childhood? Will it be of running from one place to the other until when they return home they drop in beds with exhaustion only to repeat it the next day? I was talking with someone recently and they said, “people don’t take time to visit any more”. Between being engrossed in tv and/or running from one activity to another, no one has time for building and maintaining relationships.

Sometimes I think we have it all backwards. Personally, I would rather have less in possessions, live a simpler life, and enjoy time with those I love. There are things that are important and need to be kept as priorities, but a lot of what people do are not in that category. I guess each person needs to decide what is important to them. I just hope they realize before it is too late that what they think is important now, won’t matter in a few years… or even in less time than that. Time with God and doing what He wants and investing in the lives of our children… which means more in time than money… is not negotiable for me. When I come to the end of my life I want to hear those welcoming words, “Well done good and faithful servant”. That is a priority! I pray it is for you too!
